The course will focus upon cinematic interpretations of literature, primarily in languages and cultures other than the dominant ones found in the United States. The class will consider films based upon a range of literary genres, such as novels, short stories, graphic novels, plays, and nonfiction. Classic themes of familial and marital relationships, community, education, death, and war are likely to be examined. Questions about translations (if the film is in one language and the literary text had been written in a different language) as well as necessary changes from text to film will occupy the class’ scholarly attention. Literature from Western and Eastern Europe will make up the majority of the films studied, but examples from non-Western cultures must be included. Likely non-Western literary adaptations may include films from Japan, China India, Africa and South America.
