  • PRX 3201 - Servant Leadership III

    1 Credit Hours
    This is the third course in a series of three courses designed to foster students professionally, spiritually; and to develop leadership and advocacy skills to promote the pharmacy profession.  This course cultivates patient advocacy. This course continues the development of skills and attitudes of a pharmacy professional, as an integral member of the interprofessional healthcare team by applying concepts and definitions of professionalism and servant leadership learned in the first and second courses, and emphasizing Christian principles through reflective, self-directed learning.  Students will be responsible for maintaining a portfolio that documents continued professional development.  Students will receive a certification from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) as part of this course.

  • PRX 3203 - Pharmacy Management and Informatics

    3 Credit Hours
    This course provides an overview of management principles and explores applications to the profession of pharmacy.  Emphasis is placed on the practical management of pharmacy systems, from the perspective of strategic plans, operations, finances, personnel, and health information. Pharmacy informatics is concerned with the use of technology to improve patient care as well as increasing patient safety. Coursework consists primarily of didactic lecture/discussion and case discussions/debates.

  • PRX 3223 - Case Studies in Pharmacotherapy IV

    3 Credit Hours


    This is the final course in a series of four courses designed to advance students’ critical thinking skills and abilities and guide their application of therapeutic knowledge in pharmaceutical care across a variety of settings.  The simulated course is the final step prior to the commencement of advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) and is intended to integrate all aspects of patient care and strengthen concepts learned in previous courses.  Students are expected to individually assess simulated patient cases and defend their medication recommendations/interventions. Additionally, this course is designed to assess student readiness to enter advanced pharmacy practice experiences. As such, this course contains several APPE-Readiness-Assessments (ARA’s) and a cumulative objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) that evaluate the individual student’s ability to successfully demonstrate competency in key APPE-Readiness domains.

  • PRX 3242 - Lifestyle and Health

    2 Credit Hours
    This course is intended to provide students with a clear understanding of how lifestyle impacts health.  It will identify the disease conditions that may arise from certain lifestyle choices and how lifestyle plays a part to maintain optimum health. Lifestyle choices that will be discussed include smoking, nutrition, exercise, and stress.  Students will develop a personal plan for a lifestyle that promotes optimum health. The course will also incorporate the biblical bases for the need to take stewardship over the health and welfare of our physical bodies.

  • PRX 3254 - Neurologic and Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy

    4 Credit Hours
    This course focuses on mastering pathophysiology, medicinal chemistry of appropriate therapies, pharmacology of appropriate therapies, and therapeutic principles for neurologic and psychiatric disorders. The primary purpose is to enable students to integrate and apply knowledge of epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, clinical presentation, classification, goals of therapy, nonpharmacotherapy, pharmacotherapy (drug class, pharmacophore identification, structure activity relationships, mechanisms of action, appropriate dosing regimens, adverse drug reactions, significant drug interactions, contraindications, precautions, monitoring, and clinical practice guidelines), considerations for special populations, and patient education to formulate patient-centered care plans which optimize therapeutic outcomes. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical thinking skills which can be applied in pharmacy practice.

  • PRX 3261 - Pharmacoeconomics

    1 Credit Hours
    This course provides an overview of economic factors that influence medication therapy decisions in contemporary health systems and payment for medication-related services. Particular emphasis is placed on the cost-effectiveness of prescription drug therapy in relation to health outcomes for specific conditions. Students gain experience in objectively reviewing the results of health outcome studies and the validity of manufacturers’ promotional literature from a pharmacoeconomic perspective. The economics of prescription reimbursement are explored for a variety of third-party payers, including managed care organizations, private health insurance plans, and government programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid.

  • PRX 3271 - Critical Pharmacy Knowledge VI

    1 Credit Hours
    This course is the sixth cumulative course within a six-semester sequence of courses that focuses on basic, essential pharmacy information that students should be able to readily recall from memory. Learning in the course results from repetitive self-directed study; there are no lectures or discussions. All of the information that students are required to learn is presented to them on the first day of class, and they only return to class for quizzes or exams. The intent is for students to learn and re-learn critical pharmacy facts until such information can be accurately and reliably retrieved from memory. All quizzes and exams are cumulative throughout the six-semester sequence.

  • PRX 3527 - Contemporary Topics in Pharmacy Practice

    2 Credit Hours
    This elective course provides the student with the opportunity to discuss contemporary topics of interest in the profession of pharmacy. Potential topics could include the future of the practice of pharmacy, healthcare reform, marketing of pharmacy services, Medicare and Medicaid issues, the pharmaceutical industry, and the role of the pharmacist in pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics. It should be noted that the course will utilize all the latest technology such as delivery will primarily entail online discussion, chat rooms.

  • PRX 3592 - Independent Study in Advanced Compounding Topics

    2 Credit Hours
    This independent study will immerse the pharmacy student in the development of various pharmaceutical dosage forms. Student will be able to develop procedures and methodology to compound: simple syrups, suspension, capsules, suppositories, troches, effervescent powders and IV sterile compounds. The student will assist instructing student during compounding laboratory sessions. Student must be able to work independently and be self-motivated learners.

    This required rotation is designed to provide an opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills acquired through didactic education and introductory pharmacy practice experience to clinical pharmacy practice in the inpatient setting. Students will be responsible for critically evaluating patients of appropriate pharmacotherapy, monitoring medication safety and efficacy, and communicating his/her recommendations to health care providers.   • PRX 4016 - Medical Writing-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    The elective rotation is designed to provide an opportunity for students to develop medical writing skills and be exposed to various responsibilities associated with authorship, peer review and scholarship in pharmacy practice. The student will also gain further insight into career opportunities for pharmacists requiring medical writing skills. This course will take place in a college or school of pharmacy in collaboration with a pharmacy practice faculty’s practice site. The student will be responsible for developing various forms of medical writing products which may include: a formal PowerPoint in-service, drug information questions, hospital newsletter, review article, case report or original research.

  • PRX 4026 - Anticoagulation-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective rotation is designed to provide an opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills acquired through didactic education and introductory pharmacy practice experiences to an anticoagulation service. This course will take place in an environment, either inpatient or outpatient, where care is provided to patients on an anticoagulation regimen.     The Surgery/Operating Room Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience is designed to familiarize the student with the provision of pharmaceutical care for surgical patients.   • PRX 4056 - Population Health-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective rotation introduces students to population health management and care coordination in an accountable care organization. Upon completion of the rotation, students should be better prepared to evaluate and interpret pharmacy/medical claims data, identify patient populations in need of pharmaceutical care coordination, develop population-level measurement strategies, and design targeted interventions that will improve health care quality and patient outcomes within their practice setting.

  • PRX 4066 - Sports Pharmacy-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective experiential rotation is designed to provide opportunities to build upon didactic knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences and clinical pharmacy practice by introducing students to the emerging field of sports pharmacy. Students will explore the usage of drugs by athletes for both therapeutic means as well as potential athletic performance enhancement. Focus will be placed on learning how and why athletes at the high school, college, and/or professional levels of competition may choose to use and/or abuse so-called performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). Taking into account drug pharmacophores as well as therapeutic guidelines, students will be able to confidently educate athletes, coaches, trainers, and the general public on the potential health risks involved with the use of PEDs. By analyzing regulations set forth by state, national, and international athletic governing agencies, students will also be able to determine which chemical substances (either medically prescribed, used recreationaly, or ingested unintentionally) could result in an athlete’s violation of the rules set forth by their respective sport’s governing agency. Students will also investigate the biochemical assays utilized to test athletes for drug abuse as well as the various methods athletes may use to undermine the assays. Career opportunities for pharmacists in the non-traditional field of sports pharmacy will also be explored.

  • PRX 4086 - Emergency Medicine-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective rotation is designed for students to apply knowledge and skills acquired through didactic education and pharmacy practice experiences to clinical pharmacy practice in an emergency department setting. Students will be responsible for providing direct patient care in collaboration with physicians and other health care providers by actively participation in patient interviews and drug therapy management. Students will be responsible for developing pharmaceutical care plans, obtaining complete and accurate medication histories, reconciling medications for patients admitted and providing education to both patients and health care providers. Skills developed during the rotation emphasize drug knowledge, pharmacotherapy plan development, and communication skills with patients, caregivers, and other health care team members.

    This elective rotation is designed to introduce fourth-year pharmacy students to clinical pharmacy practice in the cardiology setting. This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the pharmacotherapy of patients with a variety of cardiac conditions. The student will be responsible for monitoring patients, utilizing appropriate resources to provide pharmaceutical care, and providing drug information to other health care professionals.   • PRX 4106 - Pain Management–Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

  • PRX 4116 - Geriatrics-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    This elective rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of clinical pharmacy practice in the area of geriatrics. Students will become familiar with the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic differences in geriatric patients in order to provide appropriate pharmaceutical care for this patient population. The student will learn the activities of a consultant pharmacist including reviewing drug regimens, recommending appropriate medications and doses for the management of disease states commonly encountered in the elderly, and identifying necessary monitoring parameters.

  • PRX 4126 - Infectious Diseases-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective rotation is designed to introduce students to clinical pharmacy practice in the areas of infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.  Focus will be placed on antibiotic stewardship activities such as drug/bug mis-match, narrowing spectrum of coverage, duration of therapy and appropriateness of anti-infective dose.  The student will be responsible for patient and laboratory monitoring, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic dosing of antimicrobials and provide drug information to other health care professionals.  Students will have the ability to apply knowledge and skills acquired through didactic education and introductory pharmacy practice experiences while developing skills necessary to critically evaluate patients for appropriate antimicrobial pharmacotherapy and to communicate his/her recommendations to other health care professionals.

  • PRX 4136 - Transplant – Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective experiential introduces students to clinical pharmacy practice in the inpatient setting in the area of solid organ transplantation. This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the therapeutics needed for the management of transplant patients postoperatively, as well as the impact of additional medical problems on the overall management of immunosuppression therapy. The student will be responsible for monitoring and managing a transplant patient’s medications. Students will participate within a multi-disciplinary team. Therefore, they will provide drug information to other health care professionals. The student will develop the skills necessary to care for transplant patients and provide appropriate pharmacotherapy to this patient population.

    This elective experiential introduces students to the academic practice of pharmacy. This rotation is designed to develop and enhance the student’s knowledge and understanding of an academic career, to develop personal teaching skills, and to provide exposure to the various responsibilities associated with a faculty member in pharmaceutical education. The student will be responsible for didactic teaching, including active learning techniques, and experiential teaching. The student will be exposed to class coordination techniques and the administrative components of academia.

  • PRX 4156 - Compounding– Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective experiential introduces students to extemporaneous pharmaceutical compounding within the community setting. This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the techniques, processes, procedures and skills necessary to provide pharmaceutical care for patients needing compounded products. The student will be responsible for compounding multiple medication formulations including, but not limited to: capsules, syrups, elixirs, suppositories, gels, ointments, creams, troches, and chewies. The student will develop the skills necessary to prepare compounded products and provide pharmaceutical care to patients needing compounded products.

  • PRX 4166 - Transitions of Care– Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective rotation is designed to introduce students to pharmacy practice as it relates to transitions in patient’s care as they move from one setting of care to another and to provide an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills acquired through didactic education and introductory pharmacy practice experiences. The student will participate in obtaining medication histories, evaluating drug therapies, developing pharmacy care plans, monitoring patients’ therapeutic outcomes, consulting with physicians and non-physician providers, and providing education to patients. This rotation may take place in an inpatient of outpatient setting.

    This elective experiential introduces students to clinical pharmacy practice in the nuclear setting. This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the role of nuclear pharmacy, products, protocols, and safety concerns when providing nuclear pharmaceuticals for patients. The student will be responsible for quality assurance, pharmaceutical preparation, radiation safety control, and utilization of appropriate resources to provide pharmaceutical care. The student will develop the skills necessary to understand the procedures and safeguards necessary when preparing nuclear products.

    This elective rotation is designed to provide opportunities for students to build on knowledge and skills acquired through didactic education and introductory pharmacy practice experiences and apply them clinical practice of oncology/hematology pharmacy.  The student will be responsible for the pharmaceutical support of the oncology/hematology patient including but not limited to treatment options, dosing verification and adjustments, monitoring, and supportive care issues such as pain management, anti-emetics, and nutrition support that ensures patient safety and/or appropriate outcomes.

  • PRX 4206 - Pediatrics - Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    This elective rotation introduces students to clinical pharmacy practice in the institutional setting. This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the clinical uses of drugs for pediatric disease states, drug disposition in various age groups, and drug formulation and delivery. The student will be responsible for monitoring patients, utilizing appropriate resources to provide pharmaceutical care, and providing drug information to other health care professionals. The student will develop the skills necessary to care for pediatric patients and provide appropriate pharmacotherapy to this population.

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective experiential introduces students to clinical pharmacy practice in the psychiatric institutional setting. This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the methods, monitoring and skills necessary to provide pharmaceutical care for adult patients with psychological disorders. The student will be responsible for assessing, designing, and monitoring patients with various psychological disorders and presenting therapeutic recommendations as a member of an interdisciplinary team. The student will develop the skills necessary to provide pharmaceutical to care to psychiatric patients.

  • PRX 4226 - Association Management – Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective rotation introduces students to pharmacy association management.  This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the purpose, roles and responsibilities of pharmacy associations have in the profession of pharmacy.  The student will be responsible for the recruitment and retention initiatives of members and developing and designing programs which appeal to both the newly graduated and the highly experienced. The student will develop the skills necessary to effectively interact in a business setting and critically evaluate legislation to determine possible implications to the profession.

  • PRX 4236 - Veterinary Medicine– Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

    6 Credit Hours
    This elective rotation introduces students to clinical pharmacy practice in the veterinary medicine practice setting. This rotation is designed to further develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the pharmacist’s role in veterinary therapeutics including medication selection, preparation, and monitoring, patient-owner counseling, and office team interaction and management. The student will be responsible for check-in, assessment, therapeutic medication selection, communication with veterinary team, and counseling.     This course is designed to be an introduction to the brief approaches to therapy. The basic tenets of brief therapy will be examined. Ideas behind these approaches will be highlighted. Specific techniques of brief therapy models will be demonstrated. Two models of brief therapy will be presented: the Mental Research Institute (MRI) model of therapy and the Solution Focused Therapy model. Both of these models will also be examined through the lens of Christianity. Students will be expected to practice these models through role play. Classes will consist of group discussion, class exercises, and role playing. In addition, video tapes of professional sessions will be shown to further demonstrate these approaches to brief therapy.
