PLS 4323 - American Democracy: Parties, Elections, Media, and Public Opinion

This course is an election-year analysis of the American democratic system. It will review political parties in the American electorate. With a focus on the federal election cycle. The course will examine political campaigns and the types of American elections: primaries, caucuses, and general elections. The course will focus on campaign finance, the role of Political Action Committees (PACs) and party organizations, the campaign staff, advertising, incumbency, and other predictors of candidate success. It will also focus on American’s opinions about politics, the influence of this opinion, and the dynamic role of the media in shaping public opinion.
