PLS 4433 - Seminal Political Philosophers II: Modern and Contemporary

Comprehensive study of a major political philosopher within the Western tradition, focusing on seminal thinkers from the modern through the contemporary era, including Mill, Marx, Nietzsche, Voegelin, Hayek, Oakeshott, and others. The course examines representatives texts selected from the philosopher’s corpus for their contribution to knowledge and influence on Western political thought and practice. Topics to be examined may include the nature and foundation of political order, the meaning of justice, the role of government in society, conceptions of human nature, philosophy of law, the relation between religion and government, and others.
