The major in Communication focuses on the practice of Communication in the public sphere, specifically as a resource to lead and encourage ethical and civil treatment of other people, especially in public conflict situations.  It also provides general oral, written and relational skills, preparing students to enter the world with a solid grasp of the time-honored ideas of citizenship and the ability to participate critically in this world, with a solid grasp of techniques of discussion and debate, the ability to recognize and respond to logical flaws, and the perspectives that will allow them to effectively lead organizations in a variety of professions.  The mission of this program is to prepare students academically for lifelong learning, leadership, and service.  It emphasizes both contemplation and ethical action, providing students with a liberal arts environment designed to foster intellectual, spiritual and personal character development.
