Elementary Education Alternative Career, B.S.


124 Credit Hours

The Elementary Education Alternative Career program provides an education major for students who aspire to work in private schools, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, or other settings.

The program includes foundational courses and two semesters of experiential education. Students must meet GPA requirements and earn passing scores on the General Knowledge exam (GK) and Professional Education exam (PED) in order to be placed in experiential education semesters.

This major does not result in professional teacher certificationTo be eligible for temporary certification, a student must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited or approved institution and meet the guidelines required by the Florida Department of Education.

Program Learning Outcomes


“Expected student learning outcomes specify the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to attain in courses or in a program.” Page 69. Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), 2018.

  1. Instructional design and lesson planning: The elementary education alternative career major will apply concepts for human development and learning theories.
  2. The learning environment: The elementary education alternative career major will learn how to maintain a student-centered learning environment that is safe, organized, equitable, flexible, inclusive, and collaborative.
  3. Instructional delivery and facilitation: The elementary education alternative career major will consistently utilize a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the subject taught.

Graduation Requirements


Conferral of a Baccalaureate degree in this program of study is determined by successful completion of the Baccalaureate Graduation Requirements outlined here .

NOTE: Students must earn 42 upper level (3000-4000) credit hours in order to graduate. A total of at least 21 of these upper level credit hours must be completed in the selected major.

Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) - 43 Credit Hours


The Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Global Studies requirements are fulfilled through other courses in this major. Only 31 of the 43 credit hours of the Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Program will still be required for the completion of this program.

Articulation


A.A. Degree: Elementary education majors who hold a conferred Associates of Arts degree from a regionally accredited college or university may matriculate into the elementary education program. Neither minor nor additional second semester of student teaching is required. Nonetheless, in order to complete the B.S. degree in two academic years, A.A. students must pass the FTCE General Knowledge exam before or during their initial semester at PBA.
