State Licensure
Licensure and certification varies from state to state, and graduates should be prepared to abide by additional requirements when seeking licensure or certification in a state other than Florida.
The PBA Clinical Mental Health Counseling program curriculum and policies are reflective of state licensure and certification requirements. These laws and regulations are subject to change and students should consult the state website on all rules and procedures pertaining to licensure and certifications for the State of Florida. Students should periodically review the state website for any changes at http://floridasmentalhealthprofessions.gov and http://www.fldoe.org to stay up-to-date on regulation changes.
Post-Graduation steps to pursue licensure:
- Register with the licensing board as a Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern BEFORE you have graduated. Your approval by the Board will be made contingent on the completion of your degree.
- Receive your Letter of Eligibility from the Board.
- Complete a minimum of two years and maximum of five years of supervised clinical experience under a qualified supervisor approved by the Board.
- Periodically check the Board website from time to time to make yourself aware of any changes that would affect your application because licensure rules change regularly.

Program Learning Outcomes
“Expected student learning outcomes specify the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to attain in courses or in a program.” Page 69. Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), 2018.
Through coursework and clinical training, students majoring in Clinical Mental Health Counseling will:
- Exhibit proficiency in counseling skills unique to forming and utilizing professional relationships within the context of clinical mental health counseling.
- Demonstrate knowledge of empirically based strategies to identify ethically, culturally and developmentally appropriate preventions, interventions, and advocacy to treat mental health issues
- Develop and demonstrate appropriate professional dispositions expected of counselors.
- Demonstrate ability to integrate theologically informed and spiritually sensitive interventions in counseling practice when appropriate and desired by clients.
- Effectively apply counseling knowledge, skills and dispositions in professional practice.
Getting Started
To meet the CACREP accreditation requirement, ALL students will participate in a mandatory online orientation prior to the start of their semester.
Core Counseling Courses (36 Credit Hours)
Specialization Courses (21 Credit Hours)
Elective Approved by Advisor (3 Credit Hours)
Three additional credit hours are required to complete the program of study.
Optional Concentrations:
Students need to discuss with their advisors whether they should also pursue one of the optional concentrations offered by the CE Program, designed to complement their counseling degree and to enhance student knowledge and skills in a specific area. These concentrations are:
Counseling in School Settings
Crisis and Trauma Counseling
Marriage and Family Studies
Additional Training in Addictions
Students interested in academic training in substance abuse counseling may take an additional course to meet the CAP (Certified Addiction Professional) designation (a professional substance abuse credential for people who assess, develop, and provide substance abuse treatment services and plans):

Meet with your Advisor at least once every Fall and Spring semester. This will allow the opportunity to plan a degree sequence specific to your academic and professional goals.
