This major does not result in professional teacher certification. To be eligible for temporary certification, a student must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited or approved institution and meet the guidelines required by the Florida Department of Education.

Program Learning Outcomes

- Secondary Education 1: students will demonstrate proficiency in teaching Mathematics at the secondary level.
- Secondary Education 2: Students evaluate data to plan instruction.
- A student meeting the requirements for a degree in mathematics will analyze, interpret, and make inferences from data.
- A student meeting the requirements for a degree in mathematics will demonstrate the use of a variety of strategies for solving problems.
- A student meeting the requirements for a degree in mathematics will demonstrate logical reasoning and critical thinking skills.
- A student meeting the requirement for a degree in Mathematics will utilize mathematical language to interpret and model real-life situations.
Graduation Requirements
Conferral of a Baccalaureate degree in this program of study is determined by successful completion of the Baccalaureate Graduation Requirements outlined here .
NOTE: Students must earn 42 upper level (3000-4000) credit hours in order to graduate. A total of at least 21 of these upper level credit hours must be completed in the selected major.

Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) - 43 Credit Hours
Mathematics majors must meet the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements as set out in Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Program . The Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Mathematics, Global Studies, and Social Science requirements are fulfilled through other courses in this major. Only 34 of the 43 credit hours of General Education will still be required for the completion of this program.
Mathematics and Secondary Education, B.S. Program - 89 Credit Hours

Computer Science Course - 3 Credit Hours
School of Arts and Sciences Additional Natural Science Requirements - 5 Credit Hours
Students in the School of Arts and Sciences must take five additional hours of natural science: 1 lab to accompany the course taken for general education [BIO 1043 , BIO 1023 , ESC 1043 , OCY 1043 , FOR 1003 , PHY 1033 , PHY 1063 , or PHY 2113 (recommended)] and one additional natural science course and accompanying lab. The two natural sciences must be in different areas (both cannot be in biological sciences). In sum, students are required to take a minimum of 8 hours of natural science courses: two natural science courses (in two different areas) along with the labs associated with each.
