ICS 5003 - Theology of Religions

3 Credit Hours
This course explores the challenge posed to Christian theology and practice when confronted with other religions. The class begins with a focus on various social, political, philosophical, and theological issues related to living in a religiously pluralist society. The course then examines modern Christian theologians reflecting on the reality of religious pluralism, the typologies employed, and the vigorous debate within Christian theology. The primary concern is to see how the doctrines of God, Christ, the church, and mission are differently construed among the leading theologians. Special attention is given to the way in which methodological and typological models determine the debate. Finally, the class will look at controversial examples of living out interreligious theology; e.g., the life and practice of Bede Griffiths (Christian/Hindu) or Japanese indigenous Christian movements (Christian/Confucian/Shinto).
