COU 5163 - Foundations of Crisis, Trauma, and Disaster Counseling3 Credit Hours This course will provide specialized instruction on the nature and impact of traumatic events. Students will gain an understanding of how crisis and trauma can impact cognitive, emotional, behavioral, spiritual, and community functioning. Disaster counseling instruction will equip students to provide community support in times of crisis and include competed training in Psychological First Aid. Key concepts that will be emphasized in this course include: cultural competence, creating safety and relationship, healthy boundaries, counter-transference, indirect trauma, and self-care.
