PRX 1122 - Introduction to Healthcare Delivery

This course provides an overview of how pharmacy services and pharmaceutical products are integrated in the healthcare system of the United States, with a focus on socioeconomic factors and marketplace influences. Healthcare is explored using a systems approach to identify the most critical processes and discover how they are interrelated. Students learn to recognize key barriers to effective healthcare, as well as those factors that optimize the functioning of a healthcare system. Emphasis is placed on developing an appreciation for the complexities of healthcare, the important roles that pharmacists play within the healthcare system, their role in an interprofessional team and how professional identity formation impacts this process. Opportunities for advanced training, career exploration, and development in pharmacy practice are presented.
