HIS 4403 - History of European Imperialism and Decolonization

Intensive study of a selected topic, which provides students an opportunity to study in areas other than those elsewhere defined. This class is a study of European imperialism from 1800-1968. It examines the organization of major European empires, the phenomenon of colonial violence, the imperial production of knowledge, and decolonization. The course will examine the perspectives of both the colonizer and the colonized. Readings will emphasize the experience of empire and may include Gandhi, Joseph Conrad, Chinua Achebe, and David Crosby.
