Instruction in the Department of English engages students with writings that best illuminate the human condition – our history and the religious, social, philosophical, and aesthetic elements that comprise culture. Students are encouraged to become informed critical and analytical readers, and to respond to literature through active discussion and thoughtful writing. The English curriculum encourages students to approach literary study from a faith-based, interdisciplinary perspective. The mission of the dual major in English and Secondary Education is to prepare highly competent, pre-service English Secondary Education teachers for diverse classrooms through academic and clinical experiences.

Requirements for the Major

Students are encouraged to work closely with their advisors to create a program of study that:

  1. meets all requirements;
  2. develops the special interests of the student; and
  3. makes strategic use of allied courses from other disciplines to enhance the educational experience.

Students should carefully choose a minor or second major that complements English and their personal career objectives. All English electives must be taken at 3000 level or higher.

Foreign Language Requirements

All English majors must successfully complete at least two semesters of elementary foreign language study OR one semester of intermediate foreign language study at the college level. Students may meet this requirement by successfully completing two elementary courses in one or more foreign languages with a final grade of C- or higher OR completing one intermediate course in a foreign language with a final grade of C- or higher.

NOTE: No CLEP, AP, or transient study credits may be applied to fulfill this requirement. These foreign language credits must be fulfilled at PBA.

English Majors taking foreign language requirement courses in Spanish, French, or German at PBA should use one of these courses to fulfill the Global Studies requirement.

Students considering graduate study in English are strongly advised to take additional foreign language courses (intermediate level or higher) as well as ENG 4543 - Modern Literary Theory  and ENG 3193 - Advanced Composition .
