Susan E. Jones, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Arts & Humanities
The Area of Arts and Humanities consists of the Departments of English, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, and Politics and Pre-Law. In the Arts and Humanities, students learn to evaluate competing priorities and to acquire ideas and principles in which they can believe and on which they can act. To this end, courses in the area are organized to broaden the imaginative, sympathetic, aesthetic, and moral qualities in humankind and to develop both an appreciation for literature and an understanding of the Christian faith and its implications. The training provides a firm foundation for graduate study, family life, active church membership, and community involvement, as well as professional, political, cross-cultural, or educational research and responsibilities. The Arts and Humanities area is concerned with the development of the whole person and offers a strong base for constructive lifelong learning. Baccalaureate degrees are offered in English, History, Philosophy, Politics, Pre-law and Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and a Master’s Degree in International Development. The school also offers minor areas of study in American Studies, Christian History, Creative Writing, English, French language, History, Philosophy, Politics, Pre-Law and Spanish language, as well as a concentration in Professional Writing and Editing.
