The purpose of Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Department of Biology is to offer high-quality training in the biological sciences while instilling the values of intellect, Christian character, and personal integrity in its students. Further, the Department of Biology, as an integral component of the School of Arts and Sciences, supports the dual missions of scientific inquiry and instruction and views them as valid, truly liberating arts within the compass of a comprehensive Christian university.
The Department of Biology offers students at PBA an opportunity to study biological (life) science. The Department is concerned with developing qualities of mind, Christian character, and personal integrity, while functioning within and supporting the liberal arts concept of Christian higher education. The courses offered in biology are up-to-date and academically demanding. Current information in this rapidly advancing field is continuously incorporated into the curriculum so that students are exposed to the latest factual knowledge, techniques, and methods of inquiry. Courses emphasize independent thinking, scholarship, leadership, professionalism, and stewardship of this planet.
The Department of Biology works with the Department of Education in providing biology courses leading to academic specializations for elementary education and to state certification at the secondary teaching level.
A student graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology should be adequately prepared for a number of career opportunities. Some students elect to enter the job market after graduation, while others seek admission to graduate school, medical school, or other professional school (optometry, dentistry, pharmacy, etc.). Students planning to seek admission to a graduate school program in biology or to a professional school should consult the entrance requirements for the schools to which they plan to apply. Courses of study that include a major in biology and a minor in chemistry are listed below under the Graduate School and Pre-Health Professional Preparation programs.
