25 Credit Hours (Professional Training Option)

This minor is designed for students seeking Secondary Education Teaching Licensure. To be eligible for this minor, students must major in an area for which a state licensure exam exists (see below). Students are required to meet all Secondary Education major requirements (except student teaching) and must pass all FTCE exams prior to graduation.

The Department of Education offers a minor in Secondary Education that will be accepted by the Florida Department of Education as a state-approved Professional Training Option (PTO), designed for secondary education majors who wish to complete an abbreviated program in education that may lead to certification via an alternative route. The minor does not require the student teaching semester. Upon completion of an approved Florida College Professional Training Option for Content Majors, completion of teaching experience requirement, completion of an approved professional education competence demonstration program, and achievement of a passing score on the Florida Professional Education Test (http://www.fldoe.org/edcert/mast_prof.asp) the student’s transcript will be endorsed “Completed Florida State-Approved Professional Training Option.” With this endorsement, the graduate is eligible to apply to the Florida Department of Education for a temporary teaching certificate.
