Program Learning Outcomes
“Expected student learning outcomes specify the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to attain in courses or in a program.” Page 69. 1. Students demonstrate knowledge of sixteenth- and eighteenth-century contrapuntal practices.
2. Students demonstrate the ability to compose original works of art music.
3. Students demonstrate ability to segment meaningfully and analyze works from twentieth-century repertoire.
4. Students demonstrate proper use of computer music technologies.
Graduation Requirements
Conferral of a Baccalaureate degree in this program of study is determined by successful completion of the Baccalaureate Graduation Requirements outlined here .
NOTE: Students must earn 33 upper level (3000-4000) credit hours in order to graduate.

Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) - 43 Credit Hours
The Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Fine Arts, Global Studies, and Science requirements are fulfilled through other courses in this major. Only 35 of the 43 credit hours of the Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Program will still be required for the completion of this program.
Composition Major - 88 Credit Hours
Music Core - 17 Credit Hours
The Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Fine Arts requirement is fulfilled through any 2 credit hours of MUS courses below.
Composition Courses - 47 Credit Hours
Performance Requirements - 18 Credit Hours
- Applied Principal Music, Voice, Keyboard, or Instrumental (6 Credit Hours, minimum)
- Applied Secondary Music (4 Credit Hours, minimum)
- Major Ensembles (8 Credit Hours minimum in Oratorio Chorus, PBA Symphony, or Symphonic Band)
- All Composition majors must pass the piano proficiency exam. Piano Class or Piano Secondary studies may be required for students who enter the program with insufficient keyboard skills.
Elective Music Courses - 6 Credit Hours
Six credit hours of MUS electives are required. Four credit hours must be upper level. Ensembles may not be used to fulfill elective course requirements.
Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree in composition are encouraged to include the following in their electives: instrumental and vocal methods courses, private instruction in piano, and courses in literature and visual arts.
