Human Services, B.S.


120 Credit Hours

The Human Services major involves 12 core courses and is offered at the Orlando campus. The field of Human Services focuses on prevention and remediation of problems related to quality of life. The Bachelor of Science in Human Services degree can advance your career in a variety of fields including human services, social services, and mental health services, as well as preparation for graduate studies in counseling, social work, psychology, and human services.

For those who want to help improve the lives of others, human services can be a very rewarding field. The work of human service providers centers on helping individuals cope with their everyday lives and develop the skills needed for self-empowerment. This involves working with a broad range of age groups across the lifespan in a variety of settings that may include working with families, the elderly, education, substance abuse, residential programs, administration, child welfare, criminal justice, disabilities, gerontology, and healthcare. With a bachelor’s degree in Human Services, you will have the opportunity to serve diverse populations in a variety of non-profit, private, and public sectors.

Program Learning Outcomes


  1. Students will gain knowledge to become responsible service providers capable of working effectively in entry-level human service positions across a broad range of agencies and institutions.
  2. Students will develop competencies in helper interventions with a focus on client empowerment and advocacy applied through a skills approach.
  3. Students will cultivate an appreciation for the diverse perspectives, strengths, as well as the impact of race, gender, ethnicity, disability, family, spirituality, government, education, and social systems on the delivery of human services.
  4. Students will understand the role of evaluation and participation in the development of effective interventions, preventions, health promotion strategies, and delivery of programs for individuals, small groups, and communities.

Graduation Requirements


Conferral of a Baccalaureate degree in this program of study is determined by successful completion of the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements (Bachelor’s Degrees)  outlined here.

NOTE: Students must earn 42 upper level (3000-4000) credit hours in order to graduate. A total of at least 21 of these upper level credit hours must be completed in the selected major.

 

Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Requirements - 45 Credit Hours


Students in the Human Services major must elect to complete  ORL 1003 - Leadership for Academic Success  from the Orientation menu and  PSY 2133 - General Psychology  from the Social Science menu.
