Students will study drug structure-activity relationships and will learn to predict the physico-chemical properties of a drug based on the presence of certain functional groups within their overall chemical structure. Basic knowledge of the major pathways of drug metabolism and factors that can contribute to drug-drug interactions will also be discussed. Topics will build upon knowledge of general, organic, biochemistry and pharmacology and relate to the field of drug discovery and drug development in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.
