Program Learning Outcomes


“Expected student learning outcomes specify the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to attain in courses or in a program.” Page 69. Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), 2018.

1.   Actively engage in civil society in both face-to-face and digital settings.

2.   Participate meaningfully in civil discourse through development of skills in statistical, rhetorical, and organizational analysis.

3.   Make ethical judgements about their own and others’ contributions to civil discourse in face-to-face interactions, and social, digital and public media.

4.   Apply their faith to communication interactions with others.”

5.   Exercise skills in negotiation and mediation of conflict.

6.   Practice effective communication skills in a variety of communication contexts.

7.   Promote the intellectual, spiritual, and emotional growth of others from differing cultural and social contexts.

General Education Requirements - 43 Credit Hours


Communication majors must meet the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements  as set out in the General Education Program .

General Education Recommendations


  • Fine Art Requirement: Communication majors are well-advised to take THE 2212 - Theatre Appreciation  or CIN 1202   - Film Appreciation to fulfill the Fine Arts requirement of the General Education program.
  • Global Studies Requirement: Communication majors are strongly recommended to take COM 3523   - Global Digital Media Ethics to fulfill the Global Studies requirement of the General Education curriculum.
  • Social Science Requirement:  Communication majors must take COM 3573   - Communication Research Methods to fulfill the Social Science requirement of the program. 

Note:


A minor and 8-14 additional credit hours are required to meet the 120 total and the 42 upper-division credit hour requirements.  COM 3041   - Debate and Forensics Lab must be taken three times to meet the curricular requirement.  It may be taken a total of six times, providing three COM elective credits toward the degree requirements.
