Program Learning Outcomes


“Expected student learning outcomes specify the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to attain in courses or in a program.” Page 69. Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), 2018.

1. Students present confident public performances that demonstrate acceptable technique, secure intonation, stylistic expression, and interpretive musicianship.

2. Develop future private teachers who possess the appropriate skills to teach a particular instrument effectively.

General Education Requirements - 41 Credit Hours


Music and Fine Arts majors must meet the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements  as set out in the General Education Program .

  • Fine Art Requirement: Music and Fine Arts majors fulfill the two-hour Fine Arts Elective through major study.
  • Global Studies Requirement: MUS 3003 - World Music  is required as the Global Elective.
  • Science Requirement: PHY 1063 - Acoustics of Music  is required as the Science Elective.

Performance Requirements - 34 Credit Hours


  • Instrument Major (14 Credit Hours)
  • Class Piano or Applied Secondary Area (4 Credit Hours, minimum) Continuous piano study required until the piano proficiency exam is passed.
  • PBA Symphony or Symphonic Band (8 Credit Hours)
  • Chamber Ensemble (8 Credit Hours minimum) In addition to PBA Symphony or PBA Symphonic Band, all Instrument Performance majors are required to take an appropriate chamber ensemble each semester.

Elective Music Courses - 6 Credit Hours


Ensembles may not be used to fulfill elective course requirements

*Six additional required credit hours are needed to meet the 126 total and the 33 upper-level.
