Four Steps to Obtain Certification from Florida Department of Education

  • Achieve passing scores on the General Knowledge (GK) Test, the Professional Education (Prof Ed) Test, and the Subject Area Examination (SAE) https://www.fldoe.org/teaching/certification/
  • Graduate from PBA’s Florida state-approved initial teacher preparation program
  • Send Official Transcript to the Florida Department of Education in Tallahassee
  • Receive letter of Eligibility from the Florida Department of Education

Program Learning Outcomes


“Expected student learning outcomes specify the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to attain in courses or in a program.” Page 69. Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), 2018.

  1. Instructional design and lesson planning: The elementary education major will apply concepts for human development and learning theories.
  2. The learning environment: The elementary education major will learn how to maintain a student-centered learning environment that is safe, organized, equitable, flexible, inclusive, and collaborative.
  3. Instructional delivery and facilitation: The elementary education major will consistently utilize a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the subject taught.

Graduation Requirements


Conferral of a Baccalaureate degree in this program of study is determined by successful completion of the Baccalaureate Graduation Requirements.

NOTE: Students must earn 42 upper level (3000-4000) credit hours in order to graduate. A total of at least 21 of these upper level credit hours must be completed in the selected major.

Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) - 43 Credit Hours


The Faith, Roots, and Reason (General Education) Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Global Studies requirement is fulfilled through other courses in this major. 

Elementary Education Major - 93 Credit Hours


Professional Education Preparation Core - 18 Credit Hours (six of these hours can be applied to General Education hours)

Additional Courses - 5 Credit Hours


Articulation


A.A. Degree: Elementary education majors who hold a conferred Associates of Arts degree from a regionally accredited college or university may matriculate into the elementary education program. Neither minor nor additional second semester of student teaching is required. Nonetheless, in order to complete the B.S. degree in two academic years, A.A. students must pass the FTCE General Knowledge exam before or during their initial semester at PBA.
