The Elementary Education Alternative Career program provides an education major for students who aspire to work in private schools, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, or other settings.
The program includes foundational courses and two semesters of experiential education. Students must meet GPA requirements and earn passing scores on the General Knowledge exam (GK) and Professional Education exam (PED) in order to be placed in experiential education semesters.
This major does not result in professional teacher certification. To be eligible for temporary certification, a student must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited or approved institution and meet the guidelines required by the Florida Department of Education.

Program Learning Outcomes
“Expected student learning outcomes specify the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to attain in courses or in a program.” Page 69. Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), 2018. - Instructional design and lesson planning: The elementary education alternative career major will apply concepts for human development and learning theories.
- The learning environment: The elementary education alternative career major will learn how to maintain a student-centered learning environment that is safe, organized, equitable, flexible, inclusive, and collaborative.
- Instructional delivery and facilitation: The elementary education alternative career major will consistently utilize a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the subject taught.
General Education Requirements - 43 Credit Hours
Education majors must complete the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements as set out in the General Education Program . Education Core Courses - 18 Credit Hours
Elementary Education Major Requirements - 35 Credit Hours
Experiential Education - 27 Credit Hours
